Browsing on the information web and performing a thorough research can obtain you a large number of results. Make sure to take time to sort them out prior to finalizing a purchase.

An important factor to consider when buying a used camera lens, no matter what brand is how compatible it is with your existing camera. Basically, different cameras require different lens. So it is essential to double check the used lens you are purchasing for your camera. Remember not all camera lenses are interchangeable, so make sure you are paying for the right lens that will work with your camera model.

There are many outlets out there that offer mint or near mint lenses at a reasonable price. Before you buy, however, you need to check retailer reviews. This is the only way to ensure that you are getting your cash’s worth and not getting ripped off. If the retailer doesn’t post user reviews on their site simply Google the retailer and see if there are any review sites that may give you a better image of what kind of person, or company, you are considering doing business with. You also want to be sure to determine the any return policy and guarantees the retailer has. If for some reason the lens doesn’t work or is delivered broken you need a way to either exchange it or get your cash back.

Start by having a look at auction sites like eBay. Quite frequently you can find a fine second user camera lens in good shape on these types of sites. Many professional photographers or camera enthusiasts have taken great care of their equipment and are only selling these items to upgrade their equipments.

Regardless of the brand of used camera lens you are looking to purchase, it is important to do your research. For pure creativity the Lensbaby Composer is a lens to liberate the imagination. The Composer is a fairly simple lens design mounted on a ball and socket. The idea behind a Lensbaby lens is to create slices of sharp focus in an image. The area of sharpness is controlled by moving the lens around in its ball joint.

The results of are sometimes startling as the in focus area of the scene is moved from one spot to the next. Often while using this lens I have found that I will see what I want in the viewfinder and take my shot, then I give the lens a slight tweak and the shift in focus creates an entirely new composition.

The focus effect is further controlled by the aperture stops. These stops are round disks with holes of varying sizes punched in them thus creating lens apertures. The photographer chooses an aperture value to use and drops the desired disk into the lens over the front element. Simple and straightforward, the disks are easily changed between shots. Depending on how close the camera is to subject, wider apertures will produce greater blur in the out of focus area while smaller apertures will create sharper focus on the subject.

The Lensbaby Composer sells for about $270.00 and offers the ability to swap out the internal optics package for different looks – pinhole, plastic lens, fisheye and more. The optional optics packages list for $39.00 to $180.00.

The next lens on the list is the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye lens. The Rokinon 8mm lens offers a 180 degree view that fills the entire image frame. At $289.00 the Rokinon 8mm is surprisingly well built and sharp – most fisheye lenses cost twice as much or more. Where the Lensbaby Composer just discussed is all about variability the 8mm Fisheye is a fixed lens.

The 8mm Fisheye is also manual focus which is something an oddity in this day and age of auto-everything cameras. However achieving sharp focus with a super-wide angle lens is flat out easy. Almost any subject beyond ten feet will have the focus ring turned all the way to infinity.

Shooting with a full-frame fisheye lens is challenging and rewarding. The challenge can come from exploring the subject from different camera positions; some positions will emphasize the fisheye distortion while others may play it down. Oh, and speaking of challenges this lens is so wide angle photographers who aren’t careful may find their own feet in the shot!

Using a fisheye lens rewards the photographer with pictures captured from a truly unique perspective. Cropping the image in post-production provides even more opportunity for creative interpretation. When you have a fisheye lens it’s difficult to be a bored photographer. Even the most mundane subject can become a highly stylized piece of art!

The last of the three lenses is also the least expensive. Coming in at position three is the basic 50mm f/1.8 lens. Priced under $150.00 the 50mm f/1.8 lens can be a game changer. Photographers who have used zoom lenses al their lives suddenly find that they must move their feet to get in closer or back up to get the wide shot.

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth and every school photographer owned a Pentax K1000, the 50mm lens ruled the world. Today the ubiquitous 18-55mm zoom lens is the most basic lens of choice. However the lowly 50mm f/1.8 lens has many advantages over the basic kit zoom lens.

The first advantage is the incredibly wide f/1.8 aperture. At it’s widest opening the 18-55mm lens gathers ¼ the light that the 50 f/1.8 does. If the 18-55mm is set to its 55mm position the aperture now allows 1/8th of the light in to the camera by comparison. That’s the difference between shooting at 1/60th second with the zoom lens and at 1/250th with the 50mm lens. By providing a faster shutter speed in the same light the 50mm f/1.8 changes basketball pictures from colorful blurs of abstract players into motion-stopping action shots.

Another advantage of the 50mm f/1.8 is its size. The lenses are very compact when compared to zooms. Mounting a 50mm f/1.8 lens on a camera is to discover just how lightweight your camera really can be. And a camera that weighs less and is less obtrusive gets taken more places by the photographer.

One last advantage of a 50mm f/1.8 to mention is that on an APS-C DSLR the lens length provides very pleasing perspective to people’s faces. In other words, the slight telephoto view of the lens renders the face in a pleasing manner when printed. The relationship between nose and ears looks right, eyes appear to be correctly scaled. These relationships are important to consider when we take pictures of three dimensional people and try to print them on a piece of flat paper.

In conclusion there are three lenses that I think every DSLR photographer should consider: the Lensbaby Composer, the Rokinon 8mm f/3.5 Fisheye, and the 50mm f/1.8 lens. Adding any one of these lenses to your kit will pay off in greater creative freedom and more interesting pictures.
