Boss Theveed, usually if the camera has DSLR features but does not have the capacity to...interchange lenses hence the fixed lens feature, then it qualifies mostly as a P&S under thE DSLR-like "category/section".

what are considered "manual" functions? and "auto" scenes?

if i'm not mistaken, and i might show my age here...hehe...the term point & shoot referred to mostly the kodak "instamatic" type cameras...no autofocus, no aperture setting, maybe manual asa/iso setting depending on the film used, and takes pictures "as is where is"...

If you are talking about camera modes it's either MANUAL mode or AUTO mode. When a photographer set the camera in MANUAL mode - it means the photographer is taking all the camera controls, he/she sets the aperture, shutter speed, ISO settings, with flash or without flash, etc. The camera will not in anyway do any setup except to give you the light meter reading to tell you if your picture is correctly exposed, overexposed or underexposed (mostly, all digital cameras have these meter reading feature). Sa madaling salita, the photographer is in full control of the camera setting. Pangit man o maganda lumabas ang picture, it's the man behind the camera who is to be blame or to be given credit. Almost, all professional photographers shoot in MANUAL mode.

While in (full) AUTO mode, you leave the camera decide the setting to have the correct exposure, i.e. aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, to use flash or not, etc. Sabi nga, kahit hindi mo alam gamitin ang camera, basta ilagay mo lang sa full auto mode, bahala na ang camera, wala ka ng iintindihin. Since, you let the camera do all the settings, the outcome of the picture may or may not be of what you desire. Kadalasan nga, nagugulat ka pa sa resulta, sasabihin mo bakit nagkagoon ang kulay. Some of the common modes in full auto are portrait, night scene, sports, sunset, etc. These modes are good for beginners but teach you nothing about how to use your camera. Each mode contains a set of assumptions and programs that the camera makers\engineers (like Canon, Nikon, Kodak, Sony, Olympus, etc), think will cover the various types of shooting conditions reasonably well.

The (semi) AUTO mode is like a partnership in deciding the camera settings, say in Program Mode, you decide the ISO speed while the camera will decide the correct shutter speed and aperture speed. In Aperture mode, you set all the settings except the shutter speed because the camera will decide the correct shutter speed that correspond to your aperture, while its vice versa in Shutter mode (TV mode in Canon). There are many more modes in Full or Semi Auto mode, but I hope this above simple explanation will give you an idea between MANUAL and AUTO mode.

------------------------------------------------------------------
As of now, there are only two classification of Digital Cameras, the Point & Shoot (P&S) and the Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR). AFAIK, the best term to differentiate them is the use of lens. In P&S, the lens is fix, so P&S cameras always refer as FIXED LENS CAMERAS. While in DSLR, the lens can be changed, so it is INTERCHANGEABLE LENS CAMERA.

Oftentimes, we will hear DSLR-like camera. Does it mean to say, sa gitna sya ng P&S and DSLR. No way, P&S pa din sya dahil fixed lens camera sya.

how about this:

An advanced SLR (say, F5) can Point and Shoot.
A Point and Shoot therefore, can be an SLR or a fixed lens camera.

In literal meaning, you are correct. Any camera can do a point and shoot. But what you are talking about is what the camera can do. What we are emphasizing is the category or classification of the digital cameras and not what it can do.

So, in general terms which is acceptable in the world of digital camera, either your camera is a P&S (fixed lens) or DSLR (interchangeable lens).

Peace!!!

hmmmmnnn akala ko yung nasa gitna ng P&S at DSLR ay "PROSUMER" pero fixed lens sya so meaning P&S sya pero may features sya na parang DSLR

to answer the question, personally photography is not that expensive. for me it's a REWARDING hobby. as long as you maximize your cams potential and you're not an accessory addict then no need to spend a lot.

this is of course excluding the air fares, the gas, etc. you need to spend to go to a place just to take pictures of scenic sights, then nagiging EXPENSIVE na sya. gaya ko may schedules na ako this year to go to Kinabalu Malaysia, vietnam, singapore at maraming bundok dito sa Pinas nagiging mahal na yung hobby ko kasi nasamahan na sya ng ibang hobby (gala-addict kc ako)

To answer the question as well, I still say "no", it's not an expensive hobby unless you want it to be. There are a lot of things you can do to adapt to. Photography masters before the 80s have pretty basic gears, as long as you can maximize them to your style and needs you'll be more than ready to take pics that'll wow your audience.

But it sure is fun to buy/collect stuff

parang ratio & proportion lng yan.

pag mas malaki income mo (gaya ng mga jan), mura para sayo.
pero pag maliit income mo (gaya ko), mahal para sayo.

halos constant naman price ng abubot e.

Agree with theveed on this. Point in fact, all Hobbies tend to be expensive, only if you want it to be. Patience will always be critical in pursuing any hobby. Pag kulang pa sa budget, be patient and try to save money. In the end,at least in photogtraphy, money spent will not equal the level of satisfaction you will feel once you've seen the end-result (beautiful pictures)
