I have to admit that as much as I love SLRs, the compact camera market captures a portion of my photography heart as well. There is something so novel about being able to slip a camera into most any pocket and get pictures anytime: try doing that with an SLR. The latest compact I have been playing with, the 12 megapixel Pentax Optio A40, is a fun little camera that works great as a back-up, but does it do enough to be an all-in-one picture taking device as well? No, it’s not an April Fools prank: after half a year on the top of our Most Popular Digital Cameras list, the Sony Cyber-shot T200 hasn’t just been dethroned - it’s been completely removed from the top 10 altogether. With new models hitting store shelves, half of the cameras from last month didn’t make a repeat appearance in March. This list of cameras shows you what visitors to DigitalCameraReview.com viewed most often over the past month. The rankings are determined by the number of times a particular product page is viewed by our users. More…
Few bag manufacturers do a better job at creating innovative bags (and bag names) than Crumpler. The same company that brought you the popular “Brazillion Dollar Home” camera bag and “The Bucket for Soupansalad” is no stranger to exceptional camera bags with outrageous names. Crumpler’s latest camera and notebook bag is called the “The Whickey and Cox” (no joke!), and despite the strange name it’s one amazing bag. More…
Since the 1970s and the days of Olympus’s classic OM-1 35mm SLR, the company has tended to go in the opposite direction from several other manufacturers, building a lineup that emphasizes smaller and lighter. Fast-forward 30 years and the maker’s latest offering, the Olympus E-420, continues to push the limits of just how small an SLR can and should be - especially with the simultaneous introduction of its ultra-thin 25mm kit lens. With all this emphasis on miniaturization, is Olympus still cranking out the nice images that made the OM-1 famous? We’ll see… More…

If you’ve been scared off of color management in the past by the mystique that surrounds it, fear not. With the current crop of hardware and software color management tools, especially, calibrating and profiling your monitor and printer is not only manageable but even downright easy, even for profiling newbies. In this first installment of a two-part DCR Workshop series, we’ll move through calibrating and profiling your display - the process of standardizing your monitor’s output that forms the foundation of making what you see on screen what you get when you print your images: why is it important, how does it work, and what do you need to make it happen? In an overview that’s part tutorial, part product review, we’ll also demo the display profiling process using a particular color management tool - in this case, Datacolor’s Spyder3 Elite system.
