CES 2008: Wrap-Up (Digital Camera Review)

    Samsung S760 and S860 Digital Cameras Announced (Digital Camera Review)

    Samsung has announced two new digital cameras in their entry level S line. The Samsung S760 and S860 are your typical entry level digital cameras. The S760 is a 7.2 megapixel camera, and the S860 is an 8.1 megapixel camera, but they’re identical otherwise. They both have 3x optical zooms and feature sets. Both cameras will be available in January 2008 with the S760 available at an MSRP of $169 and the S860 at $179.

    Nikons latest addition to their line of WiFi-enabled cameras comes in a familiar package: the Nikon Coolpix S51c is nearly identical to its predecessor, the S50c, offering the same 3-inch LCD display, an 8.1 megapixel sensor, and some minor changes to the control layout. But continuing changes to Nikon’s on-board WiFi system have yet to unleash the full potential of S51c’s most distinguishing feature: its wireless transfer capability.

    The Sigma DP1 prototype was shown off at Photokina in October 2006. Many people have been anxiously awaiting this camera as it would be the first compact camera to feature a much larger sensor than other compact cameras. However, in an announcement today, the COO of Sigma apologized for the delay and let everyone know that some of the DP1 specifications that were previously announced will be changing.

    The Pentax Optio S10 won’t quite fit in an Altoids tin like the original Optio S did, but it’s still very compact and stylish. It’s a 10 megapixel camera, with a nice 2.5 inch LCD and a 3x optical zoom. It also gets the latest “soft” features, like face detection AF and AE. The S10′s feature set is essentially about as advanced as you get with an auto-exposure only digital camera – with plenty of options for metering, focus, white balance, etc. However, you won’t find image stabilization.     The Pentax Optio Z10 is a new entry from Pentax that features a 7x optical zoom in a very slim body (similar to the Casio Exilim EX-V8). It also has an 8 megapixel sensor and a 2.5 inch LCD. There isn’t any type of mechanical or optical image stabilization, but it does include Pentax’ Digital Shake Reduction technology as well as Face Detection AF and AE.

The answer to that question is very complicated, but the past can provide some clues. Every so often a camera comes along that offers an iconic convergence of design, performance, and usability like the Exacta VX, the Nikon F, the Pentax K1000, the Kodak DCS-100, the Nikon D1, the Olympus C3030, Sony F717, or the Canon EOS 300D.     Casio’s latest card camera, the Exilim EX-S880, hasn’t changed much since its predecessor, the S770. Resolution has been increased to 8.1 megapixels (from 7.2), the 2.8 inch LCD is the same, and the camera body is still the same slim, stylish one that we’ve seen before. The other new features are that the S880 has the new YouTube mode that we’ve seen on the other recent Casio cameras and a face detection system.

    Fujifilm s website describes the Finepix F50fd as “the pinnacle of technology in a compact camera”, and there are some hi-tech features appearing in a Fujifilm F-series for the first time, notably mechanical image stabilization and automatic in-camera red eye removal. Fujifim F-series cameras with Super CCD sensors have enjoyed a reputation for better than average high ISO noise performance, but can they continue this trend with the F50fd after packing all those pixels (12 million) on a compact digital sensor?
