The relative simplicity of modern digital photography has given rise to a plethora of digital photography “how to” books over the years. Given the relative complexity of digital post-processing, it’s no surprise that how to guides for Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Elements are among the most common. How can an author possibly stand out in this crowded market? Philip Andrews combines solid know-how and straight-forward instruction to make Adobe Photoshop Elements 6: A visual introduction to digital photography a remarkably good guide for first-time (and experienced) users of Photoshop Elements. • Pentax DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited Lens Review (Digital Camera Review)

Every major camera company has at least one thing they do exceptionally well. Pentax has long been famous for making some of the best prime lenses money can buy, and doing so at a reasonable cost. One of this year’s most impressive new lenses is the Pentax DA 35mm f/2.8 Macro Limited. When Pentax announced this new macro, which replicates the range of classic 50mm lenses on an APS-C sensor camera, I knew I had to find out if this lens would be a worthy addition for Pentax photographers. Editor’s Choice, April 2008: Pentax K200D (Digital Camera Review)

is a huge leap forward for Pentax’s base-level SLR line, putting weather sealing, advanced-amateur build quality, a powerful AF system, and – most importantly – a straightforward, no-nonsense approach to picture taking in a camera priced at the entry level. The K200D certainly isn’t perfect, but we’re betting that slightly advanced amateurs will bite on the bang-for-your-buck proposition that this camera offers. In recognition of an entry-level DSLR that should set Pentax up to make its biggest impression yet in a market chock full of great low-cost DSLRs from the likes of Canon and Nikon, the K200D earns April’s Editor’s Choice recognition. With its long-running Rebel series of consumer DSLRs, Canon has earned a reputation for cranking out new models on a consistent timetable that are rarely revolutionary, and yet often set the pace for the entry-level market nonetheless. Sitting somewhere between a basic “true entry-level” model and an advanced-amateur camera, the new Canon Rebel XSi continues to push the resolution envelope, reprises the XTi’s well-regarded auto focus system, and at once offers a fairly mature live view implementation aimed to entice shooters to step up from compact point-and-shoots. Expectations are always high for Canon, but early murmurs about class-leading sensor performance served up at the same list price as the previous generation XTi have made the XSi look more and more promising as the new consumer-grade DSLR standard bearer. One of four Coolpix S-series digitals announced in January 2008, the Nikon Coolpix S600 takes its place as the most expensive Nikon “style” camera and features “an astonishingly fast start-up time, advanced functions, outstanding photographic performance and a slim and stylish body.” Other excerpts from the press release claim the camera has the “fastest start-up time for any camera in its class,” allows shooters to take “stunningly sharp photos, faster and easier than ever before,” and boasts “extraordinary speed.” There seems to be a pattern developing here. Let’s see if speed thrills. Read More…

Fujifilm has always created a lot of buzz around their fashion-focused Z series ultracompacts, but the last few we’ve tested have worked better as fashion accessories than as cameras. With the latest Z model, the Fujifilm FinePix Z100fd, the company is taking a slightly different approach: while the focus is still heavily on style, the Z100fd is a more mature, more subtle camera marketed to a slightly more mature audience than the teenager-friendly Z10fd, for instance. Will the Z100fd also improve on previous FinePix Z cameras in terms of image quality and features? Read More…

Olympus largely pioneered the long zoom point-and-shoot digicam with the introduction of the 10x zoom C2100 in 2000, and their ultrazoom digital cameras have been built on that pedigree ever since. The folks at Olympus clearly believe that size does matter, and the new Olympus SP-570 UZ features the longest zoom lens currently available on a fixed-lens camera – a whopping 20x f/2.8-f4.5 optic that goes from the 35mm equivalent of 26mm to 520mm. That extraordinary zoom range makes the SP-570 UZ the current record holder in the extended-zoom arena. Read More…

As consumers, we tend to buy in to the idea that technology marches forward, offering substantive improvements with each new generation of devices. As savvy digicam users, however, we also know that newer doesn’t always mean better where high-ISO noise control is concerned. Tech heads like to make a lot of noise about noise, spending countless hours studying high-ISO images at improbably huge enlargements to make pronouncements about camera performance. But are we, the tech heads, right in our basic assumptions about noise and resolution? Does the aging Canon PowerShot SD700 IS perform better or worse at high ISOs than the new SD890? Where would a high-res compact like the 12 megapixel SD950 fit in the mix? With three Canon SDs at my disposal, these questions are easy enough to answer… Read More…
