Magic Lantern EOS 5D Mark II firmware tweaks video mode, adds more manual controls

It’s hacky and requires some fiddling, but EOS 5D Mark II owners interested in maxing out their video abilities will want to check out the new Magic Lantern firmware developed by Trammell Hudson. The new code adds a tons of features, including on-screen audio meters, audio and video gain control with the option to disable the auto settings, zebra stripe masking of overexposed areas, and on-screen aspect ratio overlays — and what’s more, it’s billed as an “open platform,” so there should be many more plugins and tweaks forthcoming. Caveats apply with this early release, though: you need to reload the firmware if the camera so much as goes to sleep, and battery drain appears to be an unresolved issue. Still, we’re certain these problems will be fixed over time, since we’re guessing there’s gonna be tons of interest in this — if Canon would just throw us some autofocus in addition to those new manual exposure controls, we’d be all set.

Veho’s Muvi adventure-oriented camcorder claims to be world’s smallest, probably isn’t

Veho's Muvi adventure-oriented camcorder claims to be world's smallest, probably isn't

It’s outrageous claim time again, with Veho is saying its new Muvi micro DV camcorder is “officially the smallest high resolution DV camcorder in the world.” We’d have to say it looks a little bit bigger than that Wrigley’s-sized model we spotted a few years back, and 640 x 480 is hardly high resolution, but let’s move on. The Muvi is designed as something of an actiony cam in the vein of a Twenty20 or a ContourHD, able to clip to your jersey or stick to your helmet and record video plus two megapixel stills onto a microSD card. Voice activation means you should be able to activate it without pressing any buttons, and hopefully you can teach it to start filming whenever someone says “Hold my beer and watch this.” The cam appears to be shipping to European adventure-types for a good bit less than its £79.99 ($132) MSRP, but there’s no word on when thrill-seekers elsewhere can clip one on.

Update: Well, it definitely isn’t the smallest; as many of you pointed out this is just a re-brand of the AEE Mini DV cam that’s exactly the same size… and shape… and is already widely available for under $100.

BT-1 Bluetooth webcam for Mac finally shipping

To think, we’ve been waiting on the edge of our seats since January to get our hands on Ecamm’s BT-1 wireless, Bluetooth-enabled webcam for OS X. Sure, 640 x 480 / 15fps H.264 video quality is comparable to what our MacBooks get anyway, but hey, at least you can be a little more artsy on your Skype calls without losing that prime display viewing angle. All that waiting doesn’t matter now, anyway, since it’s finally shipping out. Price is $150 and it includes a mini-tripod and USB charger cable — can’t seem to get rid of wires entirely just yet. As for Windows support, it’s still not there officially, but we’ve no doubt some intrepid young coder with an afternoon to spare will fix that.

Kodak ending KODACHROME run after 74 years, still can’t get that Paul Simon song out of its head

Kodachroooome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away

Kodak estimates supplies of existing stock will run out sometime in early fall. Don’t forget to hum that cool acoustic guitar riff in between the verses. You’re welcome.

Kodak tries to make digiframes fun again with EasyShare S730

We can’t fault ‘em for trying, but at the end of the day Kodak’s EasyShare S730 is just another vanilla digital photo frame. Oh sure, it sports an updated Quick Touch border, a collage mode for displaying several shots at once, video and music support, a rechargeable battery for cord-free operation and 1GB of memory, but there’s no WiFi, OLED or pixie dust to speak of. We will say, however, that the included Picture Finder feature — which enables users to select a photo that pops up in order to find more from the same era — is fairly nifty, but it’s not spectacular enough in and of itself to justify the $139 price tag. If you disagree, you can pick one up in the US and Canada this September, while Europeans can snag one this month for €149.

Olympus E-P1 now available for pre-order

You might’ve noticed this already, but for those out there who share our lust for Olympus’ E-P1 “digital Pen,” but haven’t done too much digging, consider this a public service announcement. The retro-chich micro four thirds camera is now available for pre-order from a handful of online retailers, with several different packages to choose from based with various body color (silver or white) and lens color (silver or black) combinations. Looks like it’ll still cost you about $750 if you want body only, but really, at this point we don’t know why you wouldn’t pay an additional Ulysses S. Grant and grab a lens with it. Ready to smash that E-P1 piggy bank a bit early? You’ve got plenty of retailers willing to help you out there, but don’t feel too pressured, there’s still a little bit of time to decide before the July launch.

D-Link gets official with mydlink-enabled network cameras

D-Link wasn’t exactly dishing out a ton of details when it showed off its DCS-1100- and DCS-1130 network cameras back at CES, but it’s now finally gotten fully official with ‘em, and the new mydlink website that they’re tied to. As you can see above, one of the cameras, the DCS-1130, packs some built-in WiFi (802.11n, no less), while the other keeps things wired to save a few bucks and please those still wary of wireless security. Otherwise, each are seemingly identical, and pack a 16x digital zoom, motion detection, a built-in microphone, support for 3GPP mobile surveillance (provided you have appropriate router) and, of course, support for remote monitoring from D-Link’s new mydlink.com website, which apparently thinks is 1999 and only supports Internet Explorer. If that’s not too big a drawback, you can pick up the wired version now for $180, or grab the WiFi model for $230 at the end of the month.

Samsung’s SMX-C14 camcorder now beautifying stores in Korea

Samsung's SMX-C14 camcorder now beautifying stores in Korea

Samsung’s SMX-C14, with its “ergonomic” design, touch of color, and Active Angle Lens, stole our hearts the moment we saw it. Learning that it only shoots 720 x 480/60i video was like a slap in the face, but we’d forgive it if only it graced us and our retailers with its presence. Sadly we’re still left wanting, with the camcorder giving all its love and availability to lucky Koreans, who can pick one up today for the price of 399,000 won — about $314. There it’s apparently destined to “travel around to filming sex” according to the press release at the read link, which seems boastful, but surely it’ll find time for those of us elsewhere in the world… eventually.

ContourHD helmet cam now shipping for aggro dads everywhere

ContourHD helmet cam now shipping for aggro dads everywhere

Some dads like grilling, some dads like football, and some dads like tacoing wheels on rocky downhill mountain bike runs. For that latter group (and any other similarly action-oriented folks of either gender), the VholdR ContourHD is now shipping just in time for Father’s Day — and the summer injury season. The 720p wearable cam was announced back in April and we recently received one for in-house testing. We’ll provide our full impressions on it soon, but for now enjoy the thrilling red-light footage after the break captured at last week’s Brammo Entertia test ride, or go ahead and pick up your own. MSRP is $299.99, but Amazon’s selling them for $20 less and throwing in a $50 gift card to boot — savings that will do little to offset the cost of fixing your broken clavicle if you don’t take it easy on the whoopties.
