Canon’s Rebel XS / 1000D specs uncovered (Digital Photography News)
Hot on the heels of that Rebel XS / 1000D leak from last week comes a handful of specs and new info on the rumored DSLR. According to the camera fanatics at Photography Bay, the new model will sport a 10.1 megapixel CMOS chip, Digic III, 7-point auto-focus, 3 FPS, a 2.5-inch LCD display, will weigh 540 grams, and should feature simplified 450D-like menus. The camera’s price-point is rumored to be on the low end of things, which furthers our suspicions that this will be a replacement for the aging Rebel XT. You’ll know more when we know more, so stay tuned.
[Thanks, Eric]

Digital Photo Urn is just too creepy to be useful (Digital Photography News)
If you’re somehow able to gaze upon the Digital Photo Urn without emotion, you’ll find a fairly useful product. Still, we can’t help but be a little creeped out by the notion. Nevertheless, those with differing views can certainly procure one of their own, which was meant specifically to hold the remains (or at least some of them) of your lost pet and continually show pictures of its life on the built-in 7-inch display. In case you’re still not freaked out, the unit even supports audio, so you can “hear the precious barks, whines and purrs anytime.” At this point, we highly doubt you care about the 256MB of integrated storage space, USB connectivity or Oak / Walnut motifs, but those not shaken can secure one now for around $250.

Digital Camera News, 5/18/08 (Digital Camera Review)
The Olympus E-520 is the latest DSLR to join the manufacturer’s lineup, offering some generally light upgrades to the E-510′s basic platform. Even though it’s not a major overhaul of the manufacturer’s 500-series model, when word of the new camera’s impending launch came down from Olympus, we jumped at the chance to take a pre-production E-520 out for a spin. Based on several days of shooting with the new model, we bring you a hands-on look at this brand new piece of kit from Olympus. More…
With the Canon SD850 remaining one of the most popular compact cameras out there, its follow-up model, the Canon PowerShot SD890 IS, had some big shoes to fill: preserving everything that the SD850 did well is almost as important in this case as pushing the envelope. With more resolution, a longer zoom, improved IS and auto focus systems, and a raft of new soft features, the “new tech” bases appear to be covered. The question, then, is whether the SD890 hangs on to enough of the older SD’s form and function to strike that all-important balance. More…
Reasons for the excitement surrounding the recently announced Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX500 are probably obvious. Built on a platform that shares several key specs with its highly regarded FX35 sibling, the flagship FX500 sports 10 megapixels of resolution, a 5x wide-angle zoom, manual exposure control, some novel playback and in-camera editing features, and Panasonic’s latest Venus Engine IV processor – and of course, a highly touted 3-inch LCD with touch screen capabilities. Olympus named an heir to its popular E-510 DSLR this evening with the release of the Olympus E-520. The 10 megapixel E-520, which shares its sensor and processor with its predecessor, features improved live view including the addition of face detection technology, a more advanced in-body image stabilization system, Olympus’s Shadow Adjustment Technology to compensate for wide dynamic range shots, and a larger 2.7-inch LCD. There are a ton of digital cameras out there, and quite a few of them are competing with the Nikon Coolpix P60 for position at the top of the general-purpose compact camera heap. With a 5x Nikkor lens, an 8.1 megapixel sensor, image stabilization, and manual exposure controls, the P60 has a nice balance of features and size. Is Nikon’s balanced approach enough to help the P60 come out on top? Let’s find out. More…

In conjunction with tonight’s E-520 release, Olympus has offered up details about a new consumer-grade wide-angle lens for the Four Thirds system: the lightweight and compact Zuiko Digital ED 9-18mm f/4.0-5.6 provides the equivalent of an 18mm lens at the wide end on Olympus’s DSLRs, offering amateur shooters a reasonably priced wide-angle lens that accounts for the Four Thirds system’s 2x crop factor. The middle of the month has rolled around again, meaning it’s time for another comparison courtesy of DCR’s Head to Head series. In this month’s bout, two high-end, wide-zoom compacts – the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX35 – head into the ring for a wide-angle smackdown of epic proportions: “Two cameras enter, one camera leaves!” Or something… Read More…
The 10.1 megapixel Olympus Stylus 1030 SW is ready to go just about everywhere you want to go with a camera. This rugged camera can handle the elements and can still look good enough for a night out on the town. And even if your night out on the town means the possibility of dropping your camera from a height of six feet into an ice-cold pitcher of beer and getting it stepped on by a bouncer, this camera will do just fine. Entering a crowded field of compacts that offer some manual control, the Nikon Coolpix P60 targets casual and family shooters looking to do a bit more with their cameras. With 8.1 megapixels of resolution, a 5x Nikkor zoom, and an electronic viewfinder, the handsome P60 has all of the specs to compete. In some ways, though, what stands out the most about the P60 is just how much the latest Coolpix doesn’t stand out, offering solid if unremarkable performance. Will early-testing flash problems or other lurking issues mar this otherwise well-rounded device? Continue…
Fujifilm’s F series compact digitals with the SuperCCD sensor have enjoyed a reputation for better than average high-ISO noise performance dating back to at least the F30. When the F50fd got a healthy boost in resolution on the same-sized sensor, noise performance slipped a bit at least by Fuji standards. Now the F50fd has been joined by the Fujifilm FinePix F100fd, and the question on the minds of many Fujifans is whether the new model equipped with the latest-generation sensor and processor will restore the FinePix line to its former prominence as the undisputed low-light leader. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ5 Review (Digital Camera Review)
, has been a highly anticipated released. Few expected sweeping changes to the latest TZ camera, and most of the TZ5′s hardware, including its excellent 10x Leica zoom, is familiar. A resolution bump and a larger screen keep key specs on the cutting edge for the new Lumix, but will these generally light overhauls on a fairly staid basic platform be enough to impress consumers this time around? In Color Management, Part I we dissected basic concepts of color management as they relate to profiling and calibrating displays. It’s a new month, and as promised, we’re back for the second part of our color management series, in which we’ll explore the process of profiling a printer’s output in order to match what you’re seeing on your screen with what you’re getting in print. As before, we’ll also be checking out the print-related portion of Datacolor’s Spyder3 color management system, the Spyder3 Print, and using this tool to demonstrate the process of profiling a specific printer, paper, and inkset. Canon Rebel XSi Review (Digital Camera Review)
continues to push the resolution envelope, reprises the XTi’s well-regarded auto focus system, and at once offers a fairly mature live view implementation aimed to entice shooters to step up from compact point-and-shoots. Expectations are always high for Canon, but early murmurs about class-leading sensor performance served up at the same list price as the previous generation XTi have made the XSi look more and more promising as the new consumer-grade DSLR standard bearer.
