Camera Tips and Tricks – Digital Holga mod
, How-to’s
As I was browsing through the DPGuru Flickr pool looking for a photo of the day, I came across the image to the right. I put it on my “further consideration” list, scanned down quickly to see whither it had embedded EXIF, said to myself “oh, that’s nice, he’s using a Canon Holga,” and moved on. You can tell I hadn’t had my coffee yet; it took about 45 seconds before I sat straight up in my chair, said “waiddaminute, an EOS what?!?” and clicked back.
It turns out Joachim Guanzon had the bright idea to mount a Holga lens on his 20D. He even put the directions online so the rest of can do the same. The Holga lens gets destroyed in the process, but it’s probably $19.99 well spent. The real stroke of genius, as far as I’m concerned, was using a white film canister for the lens tube so you get that authentic Holga light light bleed.

The best of DCR’s Point-and-Shoot Photo Contest (Digital Camera Review)
Voting in DigitalCameraReview.com’s Point-and-Shoot Photo Contest has closed, and we are pleased to announce that forum member bonnying’s submitted image, “Yosemite Falls,” has won the grand prize, a Sony Cyber-shot T200. We’ll be posting a full contest wrap-up story early next week, showcasing the winning and runner-up photos as well as our honorable mention picks. Until then, although the contest is officially over, all of the great submissions from the contest are still on display in our Point-and-Shoot Photo Contest Gallery.

If you’re shopping for a compact camera and have between $150 and $200 to spend, there are almost too many high-style, high-function choices anymore. But if your budget is closer to $100 than $150, the camera herd from companies you’ve actually heard of gets somewhat thinner. In most cases, the devices in this class have tended to be anonymous and interchangeable, offering roughly similar features and performance. Advertising optical Vibration Reduction and a 2.8-inch LCD, the Nikon Coolpix L15, which rings up for around $120, seems to be doing something a little different, with a longer specs sheet than most of its competition.

Camera Tips and Tricks – Hack: Disposable to Reuseable
, How-to’s
I have little exposure to disposable cameras; so the brands RitzCamera, CVS and Walgreens mean absolutely nothing. Apparently though you can take these cheapy little fillies and dispose of the disposable moniker and make them reusable.
TopTenDigitalCamera supplies all the details – from which connections to make through to where to download the software to turn “a disposable 10 dollar digital camera from RitzCamera, CVS, or Walgreens into one you can use over and over, just like a normal digital camera”. I just wonder though if all the trouble is actually worthwhile. The images, such as the one to the right, seem reasonable enough though.

The votes are in for our January Point-and-Shoot Photo Contest, and we’ve put together a showcase featuring the winning photo and our two runners up, based on votes of our forum members. In the interest of showing off more of the great photo submissions we received, however, we’ve also elected to feature the top vote getters representing a few different approaches and styles as our “Editor’s Choice” picks. While the photos in this showcase represent the best of the best, the overall quality of the images we received truly exceeded expectations. To view all of the photos from the contest, visit the Point-and-Shoot Photo Contest Gallery.

Sigma DP1 available for pre-order at Amazon (Digital Photography News)
Hey, remember that hot looking Sigma DP1 we’ve been yapping about for ages? Well if you can’t another second to put your buyin’ hat on, the handsome 10-megapixel shooter is available for pre-ordering on Amazon right this second. For just $799.99 ($200 less than the list price), you can finally achieve the satisfied sleep of a Sigma DP1 almost-owner. Sure, you’ll still have to wait till March 25th for the goods to drop, but you can probably entertain yourself by pre-ordering a bunch of accessories and booking all the models you’re going to shoot when the camera arrives.

Mustek’s 5-in-1 PF-D240 digiframe does more than just slideshows (Digital Photography News)
, Displays
Oh yeah, we’ve seen multi-purpose digiframes before, but Mustek’s latest manages to handle five whole tasks only marginally well. You heard right — this minuscule device packs a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 panel for showing wallet-sized digital images along with an alarm clock, FM radio, built-in MP3 player and a thermometer. You’ll also find an MMC / SD expansion slot for loading up those precious memories, a USB 2.0 connector and a pair of skull-crushing one-watt speakers to boot. No price is listed, but judging by the design alone, we’d say that’s probably for the best.

Two for the Cyber-shot crowd: Sony Ericsson intros C702 and C902 (Digital Photography News)
So that rumored K820 has turned out to be the C902, and that waterproof model? Not so much waterproof — just “splash and dust resistant” — and it’s the C702. Starting on the bottom, the 3.2 megapixel C702 touts one-handed camera use for those spur-of-the-moment shots when you’re doing something, like, totally extreme that would necessitate the use of a splash resistant phone to begin with. GPS also finds its way on board, and Sony Ericsson is bundling Google Maps for Mobile (good call) to get the mapping done. Moving up, the C902 is a 5 megapixel beast with autofocus, face detection, a generous flash, and 160MB of storage before you add anything on with the Memory Stick Micro slot. Both models feature Cyber-shot branding and will be available in the second quarter; they’ll come in two versions — one with UMTS 2100 and one rocking quadband EDGE alone. Look for the C702 in Speed Black and Cyan Blue, while the C902 will do its thing in Swift Black and Luscious Red (pictured).
