Olympus rolls out high-speed Type M+ xD-Picture Cards (Digital Photography News)

, Storage

Believe it or not, Olympus’ original Type M xD-Picture Card crashed the scene over a year ago, so it’s about time its successor showed up, don’tcha think? The revamped (and ever-so-slightly renamed) M+ card promises data transfer speeds of up to 1.5 times faster than the vanilla Type M, yet somehow still supports “virtually all digital cameras with xD-Picture Card slots” — whatever that means. Unfortunately, these speedsters still cap out at 2GB, and while pricing deets remain undisclosed, they should be landing sometime in April for all to see.

Fast Learner: Tips for getting better actions shots with your compact camera (Digital Camera Review)

The difficult truth, as any working sports or nature photographer will tell you, is that shooting action photos is equal parts skill and art. Good instincts, intuition, anticipation, and the ability to read a scene and make choices quickly all play a part in getting the best possible photos in fast-moving situations. While there are no shortcuts to great photos, some basic knowledge of which camera settings and what shooting techniques to depend on in these situations will go a long way toward improving your action photos.

Panasonic’s Lumix LS80: the most exciting digital camera ever (Digital Photography News)

We know how difficult it will be not to get your shorts twisted over Panasonic’s latest digital camera offering, the Lumix LS80, but please try. When a product is marked by such breathtaking features as 8.1-megapixel resolution, 4 x zoom, “MEGA O.I.S.” image stabilization, ISO up to 1600, SDHC card support, and 16:9 recording modes, it’s easy to get carried away — though we suggest simple breathing exercises to keep your pulse in check. The new model is available in stylish black, pink, or silver, no word on price or release date, so just keep your heart medication nearby.

Camera Tips and Tricks – Hack: Disposable to Reuseable

, How-to’sI have little exposure to disposable cameras; so the brands RitzCamera, CVS and Walgreens mean absolutely nothing. Apparently though you can take these cheapy little fillies and dispose of the disposable moniker and make them reusable.

TopTenDigitalCamera supplies all the details – from which connections to make through to where to download the software to turn “a disposable 10 dollar digital camera from RitzCamera, CVS, or Walgreens into one you can use over and over, just like a normal digital camera”. I just wonder though if all the trouble is actually worthwhile. The images, such as the one to the right, seem reasonable enough though.

From an ergonomics standpoint, the most important aspect of any camera kit in my view is often the most overlooked – the strap. In the world of aftermarket camera straps, the Lowepro Voyager C is about as luxurious as it gets: a 3-inch rubberized neoprene pad, quick-release buckles, reinforced connections, and an included memory wallet give it the potential to be the ultimate travel photography accessory.

Nikon and Canon have dominated the professional DSLR market since the beginning of the digital revolution, effectively condemning Olympus, Pentax, Panasonic, Leica, and Sony DSLRs to second tier status. That’s too bad because there are some really exciting and very pro-capable digital SLRs on that second tier, including the new 10.1 megapixel, 4/3 sensor format Olympus E-3.

  • Camera Tips and Tricks – Digital Holga mod

, How-to’sAs I was browsing through the DPGuru Flickr pool looking for a photo of the day, I came across the image to the right. I put it on my “further consideration” list, scanned down quickly to see whither it had embedded EXIF, said to myself “oh, that’s nice, he’s using a Canon Holga,” and moved on. You can tell I hadn’t had my coffee yet; it took about 45 seconds before I sat straight up in my chair, said “waiddaminute, an EOS what?!?” and clicked back.

It turns out Joachim Guanzon had the bright idea to mount a Holga lens on his 20D. He even put the directions online so the rest of can do the same. The Holga lens gets destroyed in the process, but it’s probably $19.99 well spent. The real stroke of genius, as far as I’m concerned, was using a white film canister for the lens tube so you get that authentic Holga light light bleed.

BenQ’s emaciated 8 megapixel DSC X800: just barely three-dimensional (Digital Photography News)

It may not be the biggest name in consumer electronics, but when it comes to stuffing megapixels into ridiculously-skinny packages, there aren’t many out there who do it better than BenQ. Case in point is the new eight megapixel DSC X800, which, at just 9.8 millimeters at its thinnest point (14mm at its fattest), is not only slimmer than the recently-announced DC X835, it even gives the company’s trimmest seven megapixel shooter, the 12.5-millimeter DC X725, a run for its money. Besides its pocketability, however, this model doesn’t offer much in the way of high-end features: 3x optical zoom, 3-inch LCD, digital image stabilization, VGA movie mode, and a rather non-standard microSD slot are par for the course here. Keep reading after the break for another angle / color combo of the as-yet-unpriced shooter, which should be shipping sometime this quarter.

  • Olympus’ E-3 DSLR gets reviewed (Digital Photography News)

As seems to be the case with most new DSLRs these days (regardless of manufacturer), there was quite a bit of buzz behind the E-3. On paper, Olympus’ latest big boy was fairly impressive, but we all know it’s the real-world results that matter. Thankfully, the kind folks over at PhotographyBLOG grabbed hold of the admittedly hefty shooter and put it through a few paces to see how it stacked up. Design wise, it was deemed a “chunky monkey,” and if too many buttons have a tendency to overwhelm you, we’d suggest stopping here and looking elsewhere. Performance wise, however, the E-3 seemed to be a winner. The built-in image stabilization, Supersonic Wave Filter and general speed of operation were all highly praised, and the “true-to-nature” image results were also smiled upon. Overall, we’d say the 4.5 out of 5 star rating pretty much sums it up, but we noticed enough quirks to recommend that you still give the read link a look before buying blind.
