Camera Tips and Tricks – How To : Convert to a Model Look
Ever wanted to convert a holiday snap or stunning foreign vista into a picture that looks like a model? No me neither. But in case you hanker after model railway shots or have an odd hour to fill you too can play with photoshop to create just that type of image.
Receding Hairline: the website of a London Wannabe supplied all the instructions and tips on how to go about just such a task. It seems you need Photoshop CS or newer (I haven’t tried this out myself so can’t comment). Just three steps are required – gradient mask, lens blur, and adjust curves. And thats it! Selecting the right photography is important though as Receding Hairline explains.

Samsung S760 and S860 Digital Cameras Announced (Digital Camera Review)
Samsung has announced two new digital cameras in their entry level S line. The Samsung S760 and S860 are your typical entry level digital cameras. The S760 is a 7.2 megapixel camera, and the S860 is an 8.1 megapixel camera, but they’re identical otherwise. They both have 3x optical zooms and feature sets. Both cameras will be available in January 2008 with the S760 available at an MSRP of $169 and the S860 at $179.

Camera Tips and Tricks – Digital Holga mod
, How-to’s
As I was browsing through the DPGuru Flickr pool looking for a photo of the day, I came across the image to the right. I put it on my “further consideration” list, scanned down quickly to see whither it had embedded EXIF, said to myself “oh, that’s nice, he’s using a Canon Holga,” and moved on. You can tell I hadn’t had my coffee yet; it took about 45 seconds before I sat straight up in my chair, said “waiddaminute, an EOS what?!?” and clicked back.
It turns out Joachim Guanzon had the bright idea to mount a Holga lens on his 20D. He even put the directions online so the rest of can do the same. The Holga lens gets destroyed in the process, but it’s probably $19.99 well spent. The real stroke of genius, as far as I’m concerned, was using a white film canister for the lens tube so you get that authentic Holga light light bleed.

Build a digital microscope from a webcam (Digital Photography News)
Sure, it won’t get you live 3D representations of living cells, but this little USB microscope mashup over at Instructables should nab you some sweet pics of up-close detail with a minimum of effort. You can pull it off with basically any simple webcam — the one pictured here cost $5 — and toy microscope, but you’ll have to a little creative wiresplicing to get the white LED light source powered off USB as well. Still, it’s a neat project if you’ve got the time — now get to work!

Pentax Optio E40 Review (Digital Camera Review)
is the latest entry-level point and shoot from Pentax. Falling squarely in the sub-$150 price range, the E40 is the cheapest current Pentax Optio camera that you can get. The E40 takes 8.1 megapixel images, has a 3x optical zoom and a 2.4 inch LCD.

Nikons latest addition to their line of WiFi-enabled cameras comes in a familiar package: the Nikon Coolpix S51c is nearly identical to its predecessor, the S50c, offering the same 3-inch LCD display, an 8.1 megapixel sensor, and some minor changes to the control layout. But continuing changes to Nikon’s on-board WiFi system have yet to unleash the full potential of S51c’s most distinguishing feature: its wireless transfer capability.

The Sigma DP1 prototype was shown off at Photokina in October 2006. Many people have been anxiously awaiting this camera as it would be the first compact camera to feature a much larger sensor than other compact cameras. However, in an announcement today, the COO of Sigma apologized for the delay and let everyone know that some of the DP1 specifications that were previously announced will be changing.

The Pentax Optio S10 won’t quite fit in an Altoids tin like the original Optio S did, but it’s still very compact and stylish. It’s a 10 megapixel camera, with a nice 2.5 inch LCD and a 3x optical zoom. It also gets the latest “soft” features, like face detection AF and AE. The S10′s feature set is essentially about as advanced as you get with an auto-exposure only digital camera – with plenty of options for metering, focus, white balance, etc. However, you won’t find image stabilization. Read on for our full review of the S10.

Canon’s EOS-1D Mark III autofocus fix makes strides, stops short (Digital Photography News)
Remember that autofocus fix that Canon was supposedly working up? Turns out, the company isn’t quite ready to start accepting faulty EOS-1D Mark IIIs just yet, but it is shipping out upgraded versions to new buyers. Rob Galbraith managed to wrap his hands around not one, but three of the new DSLRs in order to substantiate his findings, and what he found was noticeable improvement. In summary, the sub-mirror fix was said to boost the performance of the AF, as it enabled the camera to deliver “about the same number of in-focus frames whether it was warm or cold.” Unfortunately, it seems that the solution still left a lot to be desired; Mr. Galbraith noted that it still couldn’t match the EOS-1D Mark II N, and implied that there was still room for betterment. ‘Course, we’re really just scratching the surface on his thorough (and we mean thorough) look at the sub-mirror fix and v1.1.3 firmware, so if this issue has been hounding you, do yourself a favor and check out the read link.
[Thanks, Anand]
