Panasonic intros Lumix DMC-L10 DSLR (Digital Photography News)

August 31, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment

Panasonic’s still relatively new to the DSLR game, but it looks like it’s intent on proving its worth, and it’s now rolled out its second such camera: the Lumix DMC-10. This one clocks in at a hefty 10.1 megapixels, and boasts a swiveling 2.5-inch LCD, along with Panasonic’s Venus Engine III image processor, a “Supersonic Wave Filter” dust reduction system, and some nifty features like face detection and “intelligent ISO control.” You’ll also get a LEICA D VARIO-ELMAR 14-50mm / F3.8-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA OIS lens with the camera, which can of course be swapped out if you’re looking to mix things up a bit. Look for this one to be available sometime this October with an MSRP of $1,300.

Camera Tips and Tricks - How To : Convert to a Model Look

August 31, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment

Ever wanted to convert a holiday snap or stunning foreign vista into a picture that looks like a model? No me neither. But in case you hanker after model railway shots or have an odd hour to fill you too can play with photoshop to create just that type of image.

Receding Hairline: the website of a London Wannabe supplied all the instructions and tips on how to go about just such a task. It seems you need Photoshop CS or newer (I haven’t tried this out myself so can’t comment). Just three steps are required - gradient mask, lens blur, and adjust curves. And thats it! Selecting the right photography is important though as Receding Hairline explains.

Sanyo’s Xacti DMX-HD1000: the world’s smallest 1080p camcorder (Digital Photography News)

August 30, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment

We like giving Sanyo heaps of grief over their boxy gear from time to time. But make no mistake, they’ve nailed it with their Xacti series of solid state camcorders. Meet the DMX-HD1000, their first to record full 1080p, 1,920 x 1,080 resolution video using the HD/MPEG-4 AVC codec. It features the ability to shoot 8 megapixel stills via its 1/2.5-inch CMOS sensor, a 10x optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD, HDMI-out, and the ability to record direct to SD/SDHC cards for up to 2 hours at a charge. That’s plenty of juice since an 8GB SDHC card will only hold about 1 hour and 25 minutes of Full HD recordings. All this in an itty-bitty pistol grip shooter which Sanyo claims is the world’s smallest at this resolution. Available in Japan starting mid September for about 120,000 or about $1,000.

The Casio Exilim EX-V8 is the latest compact ultra-zoom from Casio, succeeding the EX-V7. The V8 offers 8.1 megapixel resolution and a 7x optical zoom lens that is mechanically stabilized (the sensor shifts to counteract hand movement). A 2.5 inch Bright LCD does the framing of your shots and reviewing what you captured. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on the new model, so I have a few first thoughts.

Kodak’s new cameras, the Easyshare Z812 IS, Easyshare V1253, and Easyshare V1233 bring Kodak to the HD-capable camera space. A new dock allows the cameras to be plugged into your HDTV and a remote control feature lets you control image and movie playback from your bean bag chair. The rumors can finally rest with the announcement of the Nikon D3 and D300. The D3 gets a full-frame FX format CMOS sensor that is good for capturing 12.1 megapixels and Nikon claims that it has the fastest startup time, shortest viewfinder blackout time, and shortest shutter lag of any SLR in its class. The D3 will be available in November 2007 for $5000. The D300 has a DX format sensor that captures 12.3 megapixels. Like the D3, the D300 has a new processing system, called EXPEED, as well as a 51 point AF system. Look for the D300 in November 2007 for $1800.

Nikon’s new Life cameras, the Coolpix L14 and Coolpix L15, don’t really change the formula much from previous generations. You’ll still find a very compact camera, powered by AA batteries, that is very easy to use. Nikon includes two Energizer e2 Lithium batteries with the L14 that gives it an estimated 1000 shots. Both cameras will be available in September. The Coolpix L14 will cost $150 and the Coolpix L15 will be $180.

When Nikon introduced the D40x back in March of this year, they noted that it “…maintains the same compact size, portability and ease-of-use as its already successful sister camera, the D40, and adds features like higher 10.2 megapixel resolution, faster continuous shooting capability and wider ISO sensitivity”. Sister camera? More like identical twin sister camera, since that little D40x badge on the front of the body is the only external distinguishing characteristic between the two models - Nikon lists identical dimensions and weights for each. Beauty is only skin deep, however, and while these two cameras may look the same, there are those aforementioned added features to differentiate the twins. Let s see what Nikon s entry level big sister brings to the digital imaging table.
