Aiptek intros sub-$300 “GO-HD” 720p camcorder (Digital Photography News)

May 30, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment

Aiptek’s cameras may not always be known for their quality, but they do usually manage to at least keep things fairly inexpensive, a trait that continues with the company’s new “GO-HD” camcorder. As you’ve no doubt surmised, the camera will let you capture HD video (720p, specifically), with the H.264 codec used to keep file sizes down. According to Aiptek, that should work out to about 4 hours of video on an 8GB SDHC card (not included). It’ll also apparently let you take 5 megapixel still images, with a 3x optical zoom, and a 2.4-inch LCD at your disposal. Of course, those specs may not necessarily translate to the best of results, but if you want to try your luck, it looks like you can grab one now from your choice of retailers for $280.

Crumpler Hoo-jah Gadget Pouch Review (Digital Camera Review)

May 30, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment

OK, so it is a pretty strange name, but remember that this is Crumpler that we re talking about. The Hoo-jah is, in general, is a gadget pouch , but this is a digital camera site so that s what I put in it. My iPod also fit nicely inside the medium-sized Hoo-jah in two-tone red.

I mentioned in my earlier Casio article that it was one of two 12 megapixel announcements today - well here’s the other one. The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100 features 12 megapixel capture resolution, a stabilized Leica lens capable of wide angle (28mm equivalent) and 3.6 optical zoom, and a 2.5 inch LCD. The FX100 will be available in mid-July in silver and black.

The Coolpix L12 is the flagship model of Nikon s L family of entry-level digicams. Nikon s L series digicams closely resemble (in both form and function) Canon s A series digital cameras, and there s nothing wrong with that - imitation is, after all, the sincerest form of flattery. Canon s A series digicams are justly famous for their practicality, flexibility, class leading performance, reasonable pricing, impressive build-quality, and amazing ease of use. The Nikon Coolpix L12 is a minimalist look doppelganger for Canon s nifty Powershot A550.

The Nikon Coolpix S200 is currently the smallest, lightest, and thinnest digital camera in Nikon’s product catalog. The S200 is tough enough to go just about anywhere and simple enough to be used successfully by just about anyone. The snazzy little S200 (like the original Olympus Stylus) is the sort of P&S pocket camera a professional photographer might carry for grab shots and to record personal images while on assignment.

For decades Nikon was the camera of choice for photojournalists and serious amateur shooters, but Canon has done a much better job since the beginning of the digital era - especially when it comes to creating fashionable and easy to use ultra-compact digital cameras. That may be about to change. Here are our first thoughts on the Nikon Coolpix S200.

Pentax buckles, gets bought by Hoya (Digital Photography News)

    May 28, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment

We’d say “another one bites the dust,” only that in the case of multi-billion dollar company takeovers, the metaphorical particulate is invariably of the gold form. Yeah, the latest mega-corp takeover is here, as Pentax has been taken over by Japanese company, Hoya. The deal was overshadowed by some rough internal wrangling in Pentax, involving calls from shareholders to reinstate an ex-President in favor of the takeover: the end result being that the current one, Takashi Watanuki, was forced to agree to the merger. We can’t draw much from this deal at the moment, but as Hoya is involved in technology like medical imaging equipment, we’d expect a proportion of the impact to fall outside of our gadgetry remit. We’ve no fear that Pentax will be dropping out of the con / prosumer camera market just yet though, so for now just think of this as a business blip on your gadget radar.
