Camera Tips and Tricks - Shooting the July sky
January 30, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
, Tips and Tricks
With the 4th of July (and Bastille Day, and a whole host of other regional excuses to set off large explosions in the Midsummer sky) in the offing, John Watson has a short tutorial on shooting fireworks. there are thousands of tutorials on this subject out there, but he boils it down to the essentials: use a reasonably slow ISO setting (100-200); don’t forget the tripod; exposure = length of trail; aperture = brightness of trail.
Working out the timing so that the starburst is centered wherever you’ve aimed the tripod is left as an exercise for the reader.

British mulling security cams that see through clothes? (Digital Photography News)
January 30, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
There’s no two ways about it: the British love their security. And when it comes to employing technology for keeping the streets clean (and Segway-free!) and the terrorists squirreled away, the Brits put the rest of the world to shame, what with their four million CCTV cams (some with mic’s and speakers, but no aggression detectors — yet), head-mounted bobby cams, rolling license plate scanners, and heck, even their camera-watching cameras. So it should come as no surprise that the government’s latest idea for ensuring total citizen compliance putting safety first involves the deployment of security cams that have the ability to see through people’s clothing, among other high-tech surveillance devices normally confined to your favorite airport. According to a leaked memo supposedly seen by The Sun — they of the journalistically-dubious “Page 3″ — Home Office officials presented Tony Blair’s working group on Security, Crime and Justice with a proposal to install what are technically known as “perv cams” to facilitate the detection of weapons and explosives at strategic locations around the UK, along with millimeter wave imaging and THz imaging and spectroscopy systems. The Sun’s George Pascoe-Watson goes on to note that proponents of the plan are aware of the likely public backlash over such a Sliver-esque scenario, which is why some officials have suggested that only females be allowed to monitor the “dirty” feeds; whew, what a relief — women would certainly never abuse a power like this for personal gratification. Anyway, we’re not putting much stock in what is little more than a rumored pitch to a bunch of bureaucrats at this point, so it’s probably okay to put away those lead-lined Jockey’s for the time being.

Casio’s EXILIM EX-Z1050 and EX-Z75 compact digicams (Digital Photography News)
January 29, 2007 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
Looks like Casio is in the mood for ever-so-slight upgrades rather than completely revamping a pair of its EXILIM digital cameras, as the EX-Z1050 and EX-Z75 both seem to be brushed up versions of their former selves. Nevertheless, the 10-megapixel Z1050 sports that all too common shiny silver enclosure, 2.6-inch LCD monitor, anti-shake technology, up to ISO 3200, rechargeable Li-ion battery, USB 2.0 connectivity, and a 30fps VGA video mode as well. The slimmer, sleeker Z75 comes in with 7.2-megapixels, a equally sized 2.6-inch screen, 3x optical zoom, anti-shake, USB 2.0, and a “best shot” feature that presumably measures lighting and surroundings in order to automatically snap the most attractive shot. So while Casio hasn’t done anything revolutionary here, you can still pick up the Z1050 for 12,990 ($107) or the Z75 for just 9,990 ($83) if you’re content with middle-of-the-road.
Update: Hold up, before you go buying a plane ticket to whatever fantasy land they sell these $80 cameras in: the quoted prices are actually in Taiwanese dollars, not yen, meaning that the Z1050 is dropping for $394 and the Z75 for $303.
[Thanks, Victor T.]
