Olympus FE-200 Digital Camera First Thoughts (Digital Camera Review)
December 31, 2006 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
The Olympus FE-200 is a 6 megapixel camera with a wide angle (28mm equivalent), 5x optical zoom lens and a 2.5 inch LCD. It’s quite a bit chunkier than the FE-190 that I reviewed recently, but it also has to accommodate a physically larger lens. Our full review is coming soon, but I wanted to give you a couple first impressions until it’s completed.

The Olympus FE-200 is currently the top of the easy and fun FE line of digital cameras. The FE line is squarely targeted at the entry-level user who is looking for an affordable, easy to use camera. The camera features a built-in help system and a nice looking, well built, compact design. The 6 megapixel FE-200 offers a wide angle (28mm equivalent) 5x optical zoom as well as a 2.5 inch LCD. So, does it perform well enough to be a competitor? Find out in our full review.

Camera Tips and Tricks - Hack: Disposable to Reuseable
December 30, 2006 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
, How-to’s
I have little exposure to disposable cameras; so the brands RitzCamera, CVS and Walgreens mean absolutely nothing. Apparently though you can take these cheapy little fillies and dispose of the disposable moniker and make them reusable.
TopTenDigitalCamera supplies all the details - from which connections to make through to where to download the software to turn “a disposable 10 dollar digital camera from RitzCamera, CVS, or Walgreens into one you can use over and over, just like a normal digital camera”. I just wonder though if all the trouble is actually worthwhile. The images, such as the one to the right, seem reasonable enough though.

First pics of RED “Spike” camcorder prototype surface (Digital Photography News)
December 29, 2006 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
It’s been quite awhile since a single camcorder, of all things, got as much hype as the elusive RED machine from Oakley founder Jim Jannard, but this mysterious beast is escaping the treacherous realm of vaporware and emerging into reality according to the man himself over at DVXuser. Aside from shooting HD footage at 60fps with those fine 11.4-megapixels, the all-aluminum cam is finally making its debut, and a few glamour shots of the first prototype, dubbed “Spike,” have now been released. It’s noted that actual production units will not sport a shiny finish (sorry, blingsters), and the official forums will open up tomorrow at RedUser.net. Ole Jim also mentioned that the machined prototype “should be operational” within days, and hopes to garner a good bit of attention at the next NAB expo. While the initial batch of $17,000 pre-orders are long gone, the firm just might take more orders for a small window of time in “early 2007,” but it’s shakily committing to a “May 31st” or earlier ship date for those lucky (and loaded) individuals already on that coveted list. Be sure to tag the links below for more very-not-fuzzy sneak peeks.

Canon warns of overheating cameras (Digital Photography News)
December 28, 2006 by Kameraderie · Leave a Comment
Who is doing quality assurance these days? First laptops blowing up, then weak straps resulting in household damages, and now this — overheating camera battery covers. While nowhere nearly as serious as the exploding laptop trend, Canon is warning owners of the PowerShot A530 and A540 that the cases’ doors can become extremely hot. Additionally, there will be a significant decrease in performance, resulting in a lot less pics of the holidays than you would have hoped. Those folks realizing that they have an affected camera can have Canon replace it at no charge.
